Wild animals sleep where cover and timing keep them safest: birds perch in trees, deer bed down in dense brush, hummingbirds drop into an energy-saving rest state on a twig, possums and raccoons den by day, and turkeys fly up to roost. Where and when an animal sleeps is shaped by two things — its body clock and its risk of being caught while resting.
Every animal that sleeps faces the same basic trade-off: it has to power down, but powering down is exactly when it is most vulnerable. A useful way to make sense of the very different sleeping habits below is what we'll call the Rhythm-and-Refuge framework — the idea that an animal's sleep is shaped by two forces working together. The first is an internal body clock, similar in principle to the light-driven circadian rhythm that governs human sleep: a daily cycle synchronized mainly by light and darkness that tells an animal roughly when to rest and when to be active. The second is refuge — the physical choice of where to sleep, driven almost entirely by how exposed that spot leaves the animal to predators. Species that sleep in the open, like deer bedding in a field or ducks floating on a pond, tend to sleep lightly and in short bouts. Species that can retreat to a den, hollow, or high perch can generally afford deeper, longer rest.
Most songbirds sleep perched in trees, tucked into dense shrubs, or hidden inside tree cavities and nest boxes. Height and leaf cover keep them out of easy reach of ground predators such as raccoons and cats, and many species pick a slightly different roost spot each night rather than returning to one fixed place. A bird's feet have a tendon-locking mechanism that closes around a branch automatically as its leg bends, so a sleeping bird keeps its grip even as its muscles relax — it will not simply fall off its perch.
Some birds sleep standing on one leg with the other tucked into their feathers to conserve body heat, and many tuck their heads under a wing. Ground-nesting and colonial species, such as some shorebirds, instead rely on huddling in large groups on open ground or water, where extra eyes and ears make it harder for a predator to approach unnoticed.
Deer do not keep a den or a fixed bed. Instead, they choose a well-concealed spot on the ground — tall grass, a thicket, or brush at the edge of a field — and lie down with their legs folded beneath them. This position lets them spring up quickly if disturbed. Because deer are a prey species with few ways to defend themselves, they sleep in short, broken bouts rather than one long stretch, waking often to test the air and listen before settling back down. Bedding sites are typically chosen for cover from wind and sight lines that make it hard for a predator to sneak up from behind.
Hummingbirds sleep perched on a twig or thin branch, usually somewhere sheltered and close to a reliable food source they can return to at first light. What sets them apart from most other birds is torpor: overnight, a hummingbird's body can drop into a deep, energy-saving rest state that slows its normally frantic metabolism far below its daytime pace. Because hummingbirds burn through energy so quickly while awake, this nightly slowdown helps them make it through the night without needing to feed in the dark.
A hummingbird's tiny body loses heat fast and its daytime energy demands are extremely high relative to its size. Torpor is best understood through the Rhythm-and-Refuge framework as an extreme version of the "rhythm" side — an internal, energy-conserving state timed to the hours when feeding is not possible, layered on top of choosing a sheltered perch as its refuge.
Possums and raccoons are both nocturnal, so their sleep hours run opposite to a person's: they rest during the day and are active at night. A possum typically dens in a hollow log, a brush pile, an abandoned burrow dug by another animal, or any other tight, sheltered space it can find. Raccoons favor tree cavities, but will readily den in a chimney, attic, storm drain, or crawl space, especially in areas close to people. Neither species is loyal to a single home — both regularly rotate between several different den sites, which helps them avoid predators and parasites that might otherwise learn their pattern.
Wild turkeys sleep off the ground. Each evening, they fly up into trees and settle on sturdy branches to roost overnight, often returning to the same general area of woods repeatedly. Roosting well above the forest floor puts turkeys out of easy reach of coyotes, foxes, and other ground-based predators that are most active after dark — exactly when a turkey, a large and relatively slow-moving bird on open ground, would otherwise be an easy target.
Coyotes typically rest in a den — a dug-out burrow, a rock crevice, or a hollow beneath a fallen tree or dense brush — though they are flexible and do not always return to the same spot every night. Denning is most consistent when a female is raising pups; outside of that, adult coyotes often bed down wherever cover is convenient.
Ducks commonly sleep floating on open water or huddled together on a shoreline, both of which make it harder for a land predator to approach without being noticed. Ducks resting on the edge of a group frequently sleep with one eye open, resting only one half of the brain while the other half stays alert — a strategy that lets the bird keep watch even while it rests.
Skunks den in burrows, hollow logs, brush piles, or the space under a shed, deck, or porch. Like possums and raccoons, they are far less active during the day and do most of their foraging after dark, retreating to their den to sleep once daylight returns.
Horses can doze while standing thanks to a "stay apparatus," a system of tendons and ligaments in their legs that locks the joints in place with very little muscular effort, letting them rest without fully lying down. But standing rest alone is not enough — horses still need to lie down periodically to reach deeper stages of sleep, including REM sleep, which requires the full muscle relaxation that only lying down allows. A horse that never lies down over an extended stretch may be in pain or otherwise unable to get the deeper rest it needs.
